growing up.

yes, i am technically an 'adult' and have been for a while. i can vote, join the army, smoke, drink, or buy a dirty movie if i so chose. i'm also married and living away from my family. those things, however, do not make me a 'grown up.' but today, i had an epiphany. i am, in fact, becoming one. and, i can prove it.

1. coffee choice: a year ago, i wouldn't have dreamed of ordering anything other than a big, blendy, calorie filled coffee beverage at the local coffee house. in the past few months, however, i've been drawn more and more to that ol' cup-a-joe in the morning- grown up style

2. shoes. gone are the days of comfy sneakers, light up sides and glow in the dark laces. somehow, i'm not sure how, but somehow they have been replaced by conservative and comfy high heel shoes.

3.pants. similar to the shoe quandary- someone, obviously a grown up, has replaced almost all my jeans with slacks, dresses, and skirts. curious indeed.

4. grocery shopping. last year, a trip to the store resulted in a cart full of easy mac, microwave taquitos, hungry man frozen dinners, those burritos in the purple wrapper that are always 'on sale' for like a quarter, soda, a industrial size bag of cereal, cookie dough, hot dogs, and maybe- if we felt extra special that week- hamburgers. when i went to the store this week, our cart was full of lean beef and chicken breasts, fruits, veggies, whole grain pasta and rice, multi grain breads, lowfat milk and cheese, green tea, and microwave taquitos (immature or not, those things were good!).

5. budgeting. when i was working at my first job, i remember getting a paycheck that was just over three hundred bucks and i thought i was the richest chick in all the land. i immediately bought a sink full of makeup and a juicy couture wallet. now, when i get a paycheck, three hundred bucks is mighty light, and almost all of it goes to bills and a saving account (who opened that? oh yeah. me. the grown up.)

it's kind of crazy to think how much i've matured. but when it starts to bum me out, i just pop in 'power rangers' on dvd, eat some microwave taquitos, paint my toes a hideously bright color and remind myself i still have plenty of growing left.

anniversary date.

i'm a wee bit late with these. my bad. our anniversary was perfect. we went to dowtown disney, which for anyone who doesn't know, is an outdoor shopping and restaurant area right outside of disneyland. we had a great meal and watched the fire works from the park and had a really great time.

this was particularly sweet of hubby to plan because we went on the same date for my birthday however my finicky film camera failed to capture a single moment. so i got a do-over with my christmas present!

resolutions (part two).

my resolutions this year are small things i think will help me reach a bigger end goal. yesterday, i posted my resolutions to help me save money.

end goal two: loose a little weight. now, i not really one of those girls that obsesses about weight (anymore). with the introduction of more a-line dresses and vintage pieces (which are way more flattering than the fashions today) into my wardrobe, i'm happier with my body now than i've ever been. but i am looking to start having kids in the next couple of years, and it wouldn't hurt to be in better shape. that, and come summer when it's over one hundred degrees outside, tiny girls in their hot pants and bikinis make me crazy.

resolutions:

1. skate. i used to roller skate all. the. time. with college and grad school, i've stopped. but it really is the only real form of exercise i enjoy doing. this year, i will get over the fact that i look silly with wheels strapped to my feet and i will roller skate in the park for at least an hour twice a week. no, that is not a lot of exercise. but compared to the zero i do now, i think it will help.

2. eat a healthy breakfast everyday. with a two hour commute, it's not unusual for 'breakfast' to be a snack out of the vending machine at two in the afternoon when i walk by and remember i forgot to eat that day. this year, every weekday (cause weekends with hubby can, and should, include pancakes) i will eat a healthy breakfast. whole wheat something, or fruit and low fat yogurt, egg whites, whatever. i even have some plans on what to eat in the car for on-the-go mornings.

3. eat a healthy lunch. i got this lunch box last month on clearance for five bucks and it completely inspired me. i want to take it everywhere! and if i'm going to do that, i may as well fill it with yummy and nutritious things. i've already been collecting easy recipes that can be prepared the night before and i'm ready to take a healthy lunch with me to school each day! (bonus: this will probably help my save money goal, too, because i won't be eating out for lunch).

end goal three: be happier and less stressed bout every day life.
resolutions:
1. be more excited for everything! each year, i get really into halloween, thanksgiving, christmas, and easter. every other holiday pretty much gets ignored (yes, even valentine's). then i get really depressed through most of the summer as month after month of heat and 'lame' holidays fly by. this year, i want to decorate and do something special for every holiday (at least the ones worth being printed on a wall calender) and enjoy this summer more. it is my last summer break before i am a full time working girl and i don't want to waste it!

2. school work every night. this may seem like it would increase my stress, but alas, it will reduce it. i am a master procrastinator and by the end of the semester, projects and exams hit me like a ton of bricks! i only have class two days a week this coming semester, which gives me ample time to spend on classwork, even on days when nothing is due. that way, by the end of the term, i will be caught up, and won't have to live like a hermit the first two weeks in may.

resolutions (part one).

well, it's a few days into 2011, and i have my resolutions nailed down. hopefully by announcing them to the blogosphere, i will have ample motivation to keep them.

every other year, i have made resolutions like "this year, i will save money." or "this year i will lose twenty pounds." and the problem i usually have is that those things are hard, and if i had any idea how to do them, i would have done them already. so this year, i made more specific resolutions that i think will lead to those end goals.

end goal one: pay off all credit cards and then purchase a new car at the 2011 end of year car sales.
resolutions:
1. i will learn to sew. sometimes, i'll get a really cute shirt for a buck or two at the thrift store and then spend upwards of twenty bucks to buy a skirt or pants to match it. if i can sew the mate to a piece, that will save money.

2. starbucks reduction. i pretty much live on caffeine and spend quite a pretty penny at coffee shops. this year for christmas, though, hubby filled my stocking with espresso beans and via packs. my goal is to purchase coffee shop coffee no more than twice per week (because i AM still a grad student, and some days there's just no getting around it).

3. cook at home more. it is amazing the high quality foods you can cook at home for a fraction of dining out. hubby and i love food, but luckily he loves most of my go-to recipes. this year, i want to try to introduce more recipes, and take advantage of the crock-pot!
